The LGBT community and their fight for equality have made great strides. Graphic design and specific LGBT visuals have played an important role in many protests throughout the years. In this article, we'll look at everything related to LGBT art, from the universal symbol for LGBT people, the rainbow flag designed by Gilbert Baker. We'll go as far back as the origin of the infamous Pink Triangle. We'll analyze and take a look at the visual language of the different LGBT groups that were formed throughout the years and how they've progressed.
The Pink Triangle: From Discrimination to Pride Art
This symbol was enforced during the Nazi period in Germany from 1933 to 1945. A downward-pointing triangle was sewn onto the shirts of camp prisoners to identify them as LGBT individuals. The Nazis assigned a black triangle badge for sex workers, lesbians, trans men, and those they called anti-social people. The anti-gay law in Germany was made in 1871, many individuals remained in jail until the 1970s, and the law was finally revoked in 1994.
In the 1970s, the pink triangle was reclaimed as a symbol of liberation. The triangle began to appear amongst more LGBT groups. Gran Fury was a collective of activists from New York City that came together to end the AIDS crisis. In the late 1980s, the group designed a poster with the pink triangle pointing upwards and with the words "Silence = Death". The triangle became a symbol of the AIDS defense movement. While LGBT rights have evolved, the Pink Triangle has become an empowering representation of the dark past and the need to overcome the discrimination that many people still face to this day.
Many of the Grand Fury visuals were minimalist and powerful, stripping away any elements that weren't necessary to communicate the idea of the LGBT community as clearly as possible.
The Mattachine Society was one of the earliest organizations in the U.S. that wanted to protect and improve the rights of gay men during the 1950s. Their visual approach was calmer and more pacifying; the images represented peacemaking rather than a demand for change.
Later on, after the spontaneous and violent Stonewall Riots, the Mattachine campaign took a different approach. Their graphic style represented real LGBT demands and they were written on windows of the Stonewall Inn. The message read, "We homosexuals plead with our people to please help maintain peaceful quiet conduct on the streets of the Village" — Mattachine
The Gay Liberation Front chose bolder and more prominent visuals. They confidently used the word "gay" alongside provocative symbols that sparked discussions on sexuality. The group was formed right after the Stonewall Riots in the late 1960s. The Gay Liberation Front in the UK used similar language to the one in the United States.
Visually, the Gay Liberation Front poster was striking by using only black and white colors, thick lines, and a tabloid style with dominant typography. Sans serif fonts were used widely, not only because they come across as gender-neutral but also because they tend to be stronger and more powerful: perfect for sociopolitical movements.
In his memoir, Gilbert Baker wrote that the LGBT community needed a new symbol as the pink triangle was forcefully imposed by Adolf Hitler on homosexuals and it portrayed a dark past. He wanted to create something that represented the community from a positive perspective. Gilbert Baker’s pride flag includes bright colors that have a positive meaning and accurately showed the characteristic vitality of the community.
Baker assigned a meaning to each of the eight colors on the flag: sex (pink), life (red), healing (orange), sunlight (yellow), nature (green), magic/art (turquoise), serenity (indigo), and spirit (violet). Eventually, the flag ended with six colors, as turquoise and pink were cut off from the rainbow. The pink dye was too costly, leaving the flag with seven colors at first. Then the committee for the 1979 Gay Freedom Day Parade wanted to fly the flag in two halves, so the turquoise was removed from the flag, which became an iconic piece of LGBT design.
Baker never trademarked the pride flag because he felt it belonged to the community rather than him alone. In 2015, the flag was introduced to New York's Museum of Modern Art as part of the permanent collection. The rainbow graphic can be seen and is identified as LGBT pride all around the world. The rainbow pride graphic is printed on many objects to reflect support for the LGBT community.
Lesbian, Bi, and Transgender Pride Flags
Over the years, the original Gilbert Baker pride flag has been adapted, modified and has inspired other flags and rainbow pride graphics for the LGBT community.
The Lesbian community pride flag was created in 2018 by Emily Gwen. The original flag had seven stripes, each color representing ideals for the community. The latest version includes five stripes, each one representing gender non-conformity, community, unique relationships to womanhood, love and sex, and femininity.
The Bisexual community wanted to have their own flag that didn't stray too much from the original Gilbert Baker pride flag. In 1998, Michael Page designed a three-color flag to increase awareness of bisexuals. The colors on the flag represent same-sex/gender attraction (pink), different sex/gender attraction (blue), and attraction both to different sex/genders and to your own sex/gender or non-binary (purple).
The Transgender pride flag was designed in 1999 by trans woman Monica Helms. The flag represents transgender pride, diversity, and the rights the community stands for. The flag features two strips of light blue color, two stripes of pink, and a single white stripe in the middle. The significance is straightforward: pink and blue are traditional colors used for baby girls and boys. The white stripe represents neutrality for those who are still transitioning.
Other Variations
Other variations of the pride flag reflect the inclusion of people of color and the diversity of the LGBT community.
Gilbert Baker created a version of his original pride flag in 2017 that included nine stripes. The addition of the lavender stripe at the top of the flag was meant to symbolize diversity.
The city of Philadelphia added black and brown stripes to the top of the standard six-color pride flag. This was to bring awareness to people of color within LGBT communities.
Daniel Quasar released a design merging both the Philadelphia flag and the trans pride flag (above) to bring attention to the progress of inclusivity within the community. The flag was based on the six-stripe flag with a chevron added along the hoist with black, brown, light blue, pink, and white stripes.
The Human Rights Campaign
The HRC has been around since 1980 but didn’t have its iconic logo until 1995. The design was started by the Executive Director, Elizabeth Birch, who had been an attorney at Apple and brought in the same minimalist philosophy. The design firm Yamashita helped create a cohesive brand for the organization, and the result is a universal, recognizable, and highly adaptable mark. The HRC has influenced many globally to push forward the progress of full equality and protection for LGBTQ people across the world.
The symbol below is a version of their original blue and yellow logo. The red version was a synonym for love, and it became popular on social media in support of two cases of same-sex marriage that were presented in front of the U.S. Supreme Court.
OutRage! came together in 1990 as a radical and non-violent British LGBT rights group. Visually, OutRage! used minimalist, black and white banners with lots of contrast. To mock newspapers, they used tabloid-style text. Sans serif fonts transmit a gender-neutral personality, and the extra bold weight emphasized the messaging of this form of LGBT design even more.
Keith Haring is one of the most famous artists involved in AIDS activism. Inspired by Egyptian hieroglyphics, his artwork is unique and identifiable anywhere in the world. One of his most famous pieces that reflected the AIDS crisis is Ignorance = fear, silence = death (1989). The artwork depicts his iconic thick-lined drawing of people with an x on their bodies. On the artwork, each person has either their eyes, mouth, or ears covered to reflect the denial of many individuals who refused to see the AIDS crisis. The pink triangle used in concentration camps to single out homosexuals also makes an appearance, creating a comparison of the treatment of LGBT people in history. Keith Haring's artwork is some of the most prominent in the LGBT community and AIDS fight.
Ogilvy & Mather created a font to commemorate Gilbert Baker’s contribution to LGBT design with his universal symbol of gay pride. In this tutorial, I've used this amazing logo from Placeit. Download it if you want to follow along exactly, or feel free to use your own video.
First of all, you need to open the video file that you want to convert. Press Control-O or go to File > Open, and select the file you want to convert.
Step 2
When you convert a video to a GIF, Photoshop will increase the size of the file, because GIFs usually take up much more space. So we can decrease the canvas size of the video before exporting it to GIF format. Hit Alt-Control-I and change the size of the canvas to a smaller one.
Step 3
After that, we can convert the video to a GIF Photoshop file. Go to File > Export > Save for Web or hit Alt-Shift-Control-S and select GIF. It could take some time before this panel opens.
Step 4
This embedded free GIF converter from Adobe allows us to change the Colors, Web Snap and Lossy settings to reduce the file size, but don't forget that this will affect the look of your image.

There hasn't been much change in the font format world in a few years, so when SVG font files came in, they took the world of design by storm. SVG font glyphs contain so many more attributes than regular fonts, and we'll talk about what an SVG font is in this article. We'll also touch on how to make SVG fonts, how to install SVG fonts, and how to use an SVG font. Ready to jump in?
An SVG font is a new version of the OpenType format, with SVG standing for Scalable Vector Graphics. The SVG glyph format allows the characters to be displayed in multiple colors and different transparencies, and some may even be animated. These attributes are not supported by regular OTF and TTF formats.
OpenType SVG fonts are also known as color fonts. One difference between regular fonts and SVG fonts is the file size. The SVG font files are embedded with so much information that instead of dealing with kilobytes, it’s megabytes.
SVG fonts are particularly useful when designing with brush-inspired fonts. You’ll notice watercolor effects contain semi-transparent areas. Here are a couple of examples of fonts with multiple transparent sections.
A perfect example of multiple transparencies is a font inspired by brush strokes. This SVG font example is created from an authentic brush, so it has that hand-crafted feel. The font is perfectly suited for editorial design, signage, and even logos.
Another SVG font example that contains multiple transparencies and lots of texture is Cardus Brush. This thick style is achieved by using hands to paint each SVG font glyph. This SVG font is bold and perfect if you're looking to create some striking designs.

If you’re wondering how to install SVG fonts, you can do so as you would a normal font. Most download files will be contained in a .zip, so proceed to unzip the folder. OpenType-SVG fonts have the same file extensions as normal fonts, .ttf and .otf. For Mac, double-click on either of these, and the Font Book will pop up. Click on Install Font and it’s ready to be used!
If you're wondering how to install SVG fonts on Windows 10, for instance, you can do so through the Control Panel or any font manager of your choice. The fonts will be displayed the same way as the rest of the fonts, in solid black.
SVG fonts are currently supported by iOS 12, macOS Mojave, and Windows 10. Currently, you can use these fonts from the following versions and above: Illustrator CC 22.0.0, Photoshop CC 18.0, and InDesign CC 13.0.1. The only web browsers supporting SVG fonts are Safari and iOS Safari.
How to Use SVG Fonts in Photoshop
The font I’ll be using to show you how to use SVG fonts in Photoshop is Bluesky SVG Font and comes in shades of blue. This SVG font script has an amazing 3D look because of the shadows included in each SVG font glyph.
In Photoshop, select the Text Tool (T), create a text box on the page, and add your content. On the toolbar, select the SVG font of your choice. You’ll notice that the logo on the right side of the dropdown menu displays the OTF logo with a small SVG logo.
To change the color of this particular font, head over to the Layers panel. Right-click on the text layer and select Blending Options. In the pop-up window, check the Color Overlay option and click on it to open the settings. Set the Blend Mode to Color, click on the color swatch, and choose the color of your choice. I'll change the color to orange to make the SVG font bolder. Click OK.
What about if you have a font with multiple colors? For this example of how to use SVG fonts in Photoshop, we'll be using Color Paper Color Fonts. The designer wanted to make the SVG font appear as if it has multiple layers. The result is an amazing mix of multiple dimensions and colors.
For fonts with multiple colors like Color Paper 3D, you have the option to use the method we described before. That method will allow you to coat the characters with shades of one color.
If you’re looking to maintain the variety of colors that come with the font, head over to the Layers panel. Click on Create a New Fill or Adjustment Layer > Hue/Saturation. Press the Option key and click on the new layer to create a Clipping Mask. Head over to the Properties panel, where you can change the color by sliding the Hue, Saturation, and Lightness options.
If you’re looking to get more specific, click on the Master dropdown menu and select each color. Tweak each one with the sliders underneath.
How to Create Font Icons From SVG
Icon fonts are mainly used as web fonts because the icons are scalable CSS properties like different colors, and shadows can be applied. All of this can be done with a better speed performance as the icons load faster. The only disadvantage is due to the many different web browsers, meaning that smoothing of the icons is unreliable. There are plenty of free and paid tools online that can help you convert SVG files to font icons like IcoMoon and Fontello.
To create the font icons, make sure you have the files saved as SVG from Photoshop or Illustrator. In IcoMoon, import the SVG files, select the icons you want to generate, and click on Generate Font.
You’ll be able to rename each file, and you can proceed to download them. You'll also be able to get the code to use on your website. You can also create a font file from SVG with this same method and have your own custom font in SVG.
If you are wondering how to convert SVG files to fonts, the process is exactly the same. Draw each character in vector or bitmap format, using Adobe Illustrator or Adobe Photoshop. You can use the same applications as above or paid software like Glyphs, professional font editing software that lets you import SVG files to create each font character. Now you're ready to make SVG fonts!

What You’ll Need to Create Your Tri-Fold Brochure Template
In this tutorial, we’ll be using Affinity Publisher to create our three-fold brochure template. If you’re an InDesign user, you can download the InDesign brochure template here.
As well as access to Affinity Publisher, you’ll also need to download the following fonts and images from Envato Elements to recreate the tri-fold brochure template pictured here:
1. How to Set Up Your Blank Brochure Template in Affinity Publisher
Step 1
Open Publisher, and go to File > New.
Select Print from the options along the top of the window. Set the Page width to 11 in and Page height to 8.5 in. Increase the Number of pages to 2.
Step 2
From the Margins options, set a margin width of 0.375 in for all sides of the page. Add a Bleed width of 0.125 in.
Then click Create.
Step 3
To mark out the folds in our brochure template, make sure the rulers are visible (View > Show Rulers).
Double-click on Master A in the Pages panel (View > Studio > Pages), and pull out a guide from the left-hand ruler to 3.66 in.
Then pull out a second guide to 7.33 in.
Step 4
To make sure we place content centrally on each section of the tri-fold brochure, we can add margin lines on either side of each fold.
Pull out guides to 3.29 in, 4.05 in, 6.95 in, and 7.69 in.
Step 5
Go to the Swatches panel (View > Studio > Swatches) and choose Add Global Colour from the drop-down menu in the top-right corner.
Name the swatch Off-White and set the levels below to C=3 M=1 Y=4 K=0. Then click Add.
Repeat to create two more swatches:
Navy: C=100 M=89 Y=39 K=32
Orange: C=3 M=82 Y=97 K=0
Step 6
Double-click on Page 1 in the Pages panel to go back to the pages of your document.
Go to the Layers panel (View > Studio > Layers) and rename Layer 1 as Background.
Click on the Add Layer button at the bottom right of the panel. Name this second layer Images and Color. Repeat to create a third layer, naming this Text.
Select both the Text and Images and Color layers and lock them by clicking the padlock icon at top right.
2. How to Add Color and Images to Your Affinity Publisher Brochure Template
Step 1
Working on the Background layer, select the Rectangle Tool (M) from the Tools panel and drag across the whole of Page 1, extending the edges up to the bleed.
From the Swatches panel, set the Fill Color to Off-White.
Step 2
Use the Rectangle Tool to create a second shape on Page 1, across the central and right-hand section of the trifold brochure.
Set the Fill to Orange.
Step 3
Switch to the Picture Frame Rectangle Tool (F) and create a frame across the bottom half of Page 1, across the left-hand and central section.
Go to File > Place, choose an image, such as this one, and click Open.
Double-click inside the picture frame to select the image directly, and scale it until you’re happy with the position.
Step 4
Select the picture frame and Edit > Copy, Edit > Paste it, moving the copy up to the top-right corner of the tri-fold brochure template.
Use File > Place to replace the image with a different one, such as this one.
Step 5
Use the Rectangle Tool to create a shape across the bottom of the central section, setting the Fill to Navy.
From the Colour panel (View > Studio > Colour), reduce the Opacity to 80%.
Step 6
Select the navy shape and Copy and Paste it, moving it directly above the original. Switch the Fill to Orange.
In the Layers panel, choose Multiply for the Blending Mode.
Step 7
Select the image frame at the top-right of Page 1, and Edit > Copy it.
Scroll down to Page 2 and Edit > Paste, expanding the picture frame to fill the whole page of the tri-fold brochure template and scaling the image inside to fit it.
Step 8
Select the navy rectangle on Page 1 and Copy it, pasting it onto Page 2.
Select the orange shape on the central section of Page 1 and Copy that too, pasting onto Page 2. Resize it so it fits across the whole of the left-hand section of the tri-fold brochure.
Paste again, moving the orange shape over to the right-hand section and scaling it to fill the lower two thirds of the section.
3. How to Format Stylish Typography for Your Affinity Publisher Brochure Template
Step 1
Lock the Text and Color layer and unlock the top layer, Text.
Select the Frame Text Tool (T) and drag across the bottom of the far-right section of Page 1, using the margin guides to position the frame.
Type in the brochure title, and from the Character and Paragraph panels (View > Studio > Character), set the Font to Mondia, Size 52 pt, and Align Center.
Set the Font Colour to Off-White.
Add a subtitle below the heading, set in CA Saygon Text, Size 10 pt.
Step 2
Over the blue shape, create another text frame for a sub-heading, setting the Font to Mondia, Size 20 pt, and Align Left.
From the Typography panel, check the All Caps icon.
Create a larger text frame below this for body text, setting the Font to CA Saygon Text, Size 10 pt.
Add a pull-quote above, set in Mondia, Size 19 pt, Align Right.
Step 3
The white space at the top of the left-hand section is a good place for contact details.
Set subtitles in Mondia, 20 pt, and a Navy Font Color.
Body text should be CA Saygon Text, 10 pt.
Step 4
Select the sub-heading and body text frame on the central section of Page 1, and Copy them.
Scroll down to Page 2 and Paste.
Paste again, moving this over to the top of the left-hand section.
You can also add more pull quotes or reviews at the top of the right-hand section on Page 2.
Step 5
If you want to add a logo to the front cover of your tri-fold brochure template, unlock the Images and Color layer, and extend the right edge of the orange shape at the top of Page 1, hitting about halfway across the right-hand section.
You can either File > Place a logo or create an icon using the shape tools in Publisher, such as the Ellipse Tool (M).
4. How to Export Your Tri-Fold Brochure Template for Print
Step 1
When you’ve finished working on your Affinity Publisher brochure template, it’s time to export your artwork as a PDF, ready for sending to print.
Make sure to File > Save your work, before going to File > Export.
In the window that opens, choose PDF from the icon options at the top, and select PDF (press ready) from the Preset menu.
Make sure the Raster DPI is set to 300, and that the Include Bleed box is checked.
Then click Export.
Step 2
Name your file, select a folder to save it into, and then hit Save.
You can send the exported PDF straight off to the printers—awesome work!

In this tutorial, we will learn how to create a basic, yet colorful monospace pixel font in OpenType-SVG.
What Is a Monospace Font?
Monospace fonts are fonts whose letters and characters have the same proportional horizontal space, meaning each letter has the same character width. Monospaced fonts originated from 'typewriter fonts'. They basically mimic the slab serif font style used in typewriters, back in the day, because the letter spacing and widths used on typewriters were not adjustable, thus they had the same fixed-width space. Early CRT computer screens also used fixed-width characters for computer code, but in pixel form.
Today, monospaced fonts are used for displaying tabular data, like statistical tables and spreadsheets or in books, magazines, and so on, where large amounts of text need easy legibility.
What Is OpenType-SVG?
Also referred to as 'Color Fonts', it is a font format in which the font has some or all its glyphs represented as SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics). This type of format allows multiple colors to display in a single glyph.
Today, we will build a monospaced pixel font in OpenType-SVG format using Adobe Illustrator and its Fontself Maker plugin to bring the vectored letters into an OpenType-SVG font file with Fontself Maker.
Let's start creating!
1. How to Set Up the Illustrator File for Font Creation
Step 1
The most important thing to do before creating our font is to set up the Adobe Illustrator file in the correct color mode. When designing OpenType-SVG color fonts, it's best to set the file color mode to RGB.
Since we will create a monospaced font with a fixed width and in pixel form, we will work within a 50 px grid on a 7x7 block format.
Create New Document (Command-N) and in the New Document dialog box, select either for Mobile,Web, Film & Video or ArtandIllustration files, which come by default as an RGB profile.
Name the file 'MonoPixel', and set the dimensions and Settings to:
Number of Artboards: 26 (For the A-Z letters of the English alphabet)
Width: 350 px
Height: 350 px
Units: Pixels
In the Advanced tab, More Settings dialog box, type in the following settings:
Spacing: 50 px
Columns: 26
Color Mode: RGB
Raster Effects: High (72 ppi)
Preview Mode: Default
Step 2
Next, let's lay out our grid. Go to Illustrator > Preferences > Guides & Grid and set the Gridline to Every:50 px, and OK.
Step 3
Turn on Rulers: View > Rulers > Show Rulers (Command-R).
Turn on Snap to Grid to snap our shapes to the grid: View > Snap to Grid.
In order to align the grid to the artboard, click and drag that square to the very top-left corner of your artboard to set the grid to start in the top-left corner of your first artboard. You will see the '0' value move.
Step 4
Open the Layers panel (Window > Stroke).
Our next step is to define our font metrics (Type Anatomy) by setting up guides that Fontselfhonors. There are four main Ruler guides you should add, per row of characters. You will only need to set this once. Before we do, here's a quick guide to the main font metrics you should know:
X-Height: The height of a lowercase part of a letter. This is typically defined by the height of a lowercase x.
Ascender: The part of a lowercase letter that rises above the x-height, for example, in letters like b and d.
Baseline: Basically the line on which all letters sit.
Descender: The part of a letter that extends below the Baseline, like p, q, or y.
CapHeight: The distance from the Baseline to the top of the uppercase letters.
Let's position our Ruler Guides onto our canvas. To place horizontal guides, position the pointer on the top ruler and drag down onto the canvas to make a Rulerhorizontal guide. Add four horizontal guides. Label each guideline in the Layers panel (double-click on the layer to rename):
Ascender (ASCENDER or ascender)
CapHeight (CAPHEIGHT or capheight)
Baseline (BASELINE or baseline)
Descender (DESCENDER or descender)
Step 5
Now we need to add two other artboard rows: one row for Numerals glyphs 0-9, and the other for the 15 Punctuation marks.
Go to File > Document Setup > Edit Artboards. Select the first ten artboards, hold down the Shift and Alt keys, and drag down to duplicate the artboards.
Next, grab the 15 top artboards, hold down the Shift and Alt keys, and drag the set under the Numerals row.
Step 6
You will notice the Ruler Guides don't duplicate when you duplicate artboards.
Select the four horizontal Ruler Guides, and then hold the Shift and Alt keys and drag them down to the Numerals row.
Repeat the process to duplicate the Ruler Guides to the Punctuation row.
Step 7
And for the last part of our setup, we need to organize our layers.
From the Layers panel, double-click and rename 'Layer 1' to 'Guidelines'. Lock the 'Guidelines' layer and tap the Create New Layer icon +. Create three layers in the following order: Alphabet, Numerals, and Punctuation.
Now, our Layers panel is organized, and we are ready to start building our font!
2. How to Construct a Monospaced Pixel Font Using Adobe Illustrator
Step 1
Let's start building our monospace pixel font.
For the sake of this tutorial, we are going to create a Regular type font style, in uppercase letterforms, and in multicolor!
Commonly, when designing a font, we use strokes to make the design process more adaptable, but since pixel fonts are square, we will work with square blocks instead.
In the 7x7 artboards, we will build our letters within a 5x5 block width. First, we will draw each letter square by square, and then we will give each square a color Fill, to create our color font.
Make sure you are on the 'Alphabet' layer, and head over to the first artboard, so we can start drawing our first glyph, 'A'.
Grab the Rectangle Tool (M), and apply a black Fill and null stroke.
Because we have Snap to Grid on, we can easily draw our square blocks to make our 'A' shape. Create your 'A' style.
Step 2
Moving on, continue to use the Rectangle Tool (M), with a black Fill and null stroke, to create draw glyphs B to Z, on each individual artboard.
Keep in mind that all glyphs will be uppercase. This is a monospace sans serif font and should follow the five block width dimensions.
The character design itself is up to you. Make sure the letters are simple and easy to read when zoomed out.
Step 3
Next, we need to Group the shapes of each glyph—this will help Fontself Makerto turn each character into one glyph instead of two.
Grab the Selection Tool (V), and drag over to select the respective square shapes of each glyph, and then Group (Command-G). Group each of the 26 glyphs.
Then, in the Layers panel, we need to give each glyph group its shortcut key name. 'A' for A, 'B' for B, and so forth.
In order to name the sublayers, Expand the 'Alphabet' layer by clicking the > on the left. Double-click on the respective layer to rename. Then drag the layers in alphabetical order to save them in an easy-to-navigate hierarchy, from A-Z, as shown below.
Step 4
Moving on, let's create our Numeral glyphs.
Collapse the 'Alphabet' layer, Lock it, and move on to the 'Numerals' layer.
Grab the Rectangle Tool (M) from the Tools menu, and apply a black Fill and null stroke. Draw in numeral glyphs 0-9, moving from artboard to artboard, the same as we did for the alphabet glyphs.
Tip: Make sure, when creating the zero, to cross it from the center in order to differentiate it from an 'O'.
Step 5
Moving on, we need to group the shapes of each glyph, as we did with the alphabet glyphs.
Grab the Selection Tool (V) to select each glyph's shapes, and Group (Command-G).
After that, you can Expand the 'Numerals' layer, label each glyph, and layer in order.
Step 6
Next, we are going to include the short glyphs, such as commas, dashes, and periods, in the monospace sans serif font collection. The most commonly used ones are:
@ ? & # ! , . - x + = ( ) / ’
When creating the punctuation glyphs, you will notice you cannot create glyphs in the same width as the alphabet and numerals. For example, the following marks , . ! ' cannot maintain the same width or height, so wherever it applies, you should align with the CapHeight or Baseline if possible.
From the Layers panel, Lock the 'Numerals' layer and move on to the 'Punctuation' layer.
Using the same creation method and process we used in Steps 1 and 5, create the punctuation glyphs.
Step 7
When you're done, proceed by selecting each glyph's shapes and Group (Command-G).
After that, you can Expand the 'Punctuation' layer and name each glyph.
3. How to Color the Font Glyphs
Step 1
For the sake of this tutorial, I've decided to create a colorful monospaced font style, instead of regular black.
Once we have designed our 51 glyphs of the Alphabet, Numerals, and Punctuation, we can move on to coloring the monospace pixel font.
Look for color palettes on Coolors or Adobe Color. Our brains are receptive to certain color formulas, so choose an appealing color palette and upload it to your Swatches panel (Window > Swatches).
For a fun approach, I decided to go with seven rainbow pastel colors:

Step 2
Let's start coloring! Unlock the 'Alphabet' and 'Numerals' layers.
We will color glyph by glyph. View > Hide Grid, for better visuals.
Select our color swatch group from the Swatches panel. Use the Selection Tool (V) to select the 'A' glyph.
Select the Live Paint Bucket Tool (K) and our pastel color swatches from the Swatches panel, and apply a different color to the square blocks.
Step 3
From the Layers panel, click on the eye icon on the left of the 'Guidelines' layer, to toggle the visibility off.
Continue to use the same method of coloring to color in the 50 remaining glyphs. It might take you a little time to go through, so be patient.
4. How to Create the Font Using Fontself Maker
Step 1
Now that our font characters are colored and ready, we can move over to Fontself Maker. Fontself Makeris an extension for Illustrator, designed for making fonts.
Open the Fontself Maker extension. Window > Extensions> Fontself Maker.
From the Layers panel, Toggle Visibility on for the 'Guidelines' layer, and Unlock the layer. Then Unlock Guides, View > Unlock Guides.
Delete the guidelines on both the 'Numbers' and 'Punctuation' guidelines, so we just have one set of guides to upload to Fontself Maker.
Step 2
We will upload each row of characters, one by one, to Fontself. Fontself makes things easy for you, once you have organized the glyphs and guidelines as we have.
Select the first row of alphabet characters, plus the Ruler Guides, and drag them into the A-Z space at the top of the Fontself window.
Then select the row of numeral characters in Illustrator, and drag them onto the 0-9 section of the Fontself window.
After that, select the punctuation characters in Illustrator, and drag them to the bottom of the Fontself window, the 'Any character' (Batch).
Step 3
You will see now that every glyph is placed in its own slot, and the marker beneath it shows the key associated with the glyph. Also, in the Fontself window, you will see a Live Previewof the letters showcased at the top of the panel.
You can see your font in action in the Live Preview window, and you can even test type it for yourself.
Clicking on the Live Preview cog icon on the far right allows you to change the Font Size (25pt), Alignment (Left Alignment), and Background Color (Black).
Step 4
By default, FontselfMaker adds spacing between glyphs. You can play with the letter spacing by clicking the + and - symbols next to the Letter Space tab. In the Fontself panel:
Letter Space helps you adjust the spacing between all glyphs.
Line Space adjusts the Line Height.
Scale adjusts the size of all the glyphs and the spacing and kerning values.
Click the Advanced button in the Fontselfpanel, and let's change the spacing to a value of 70 by pressing + on the Letter Space tab. You will see the spacing change in the right column.
Note: If you want to adjust the spacing around a single letter, you can drag the sidebars left or right next to the glyph in the Fontself window.
Step 5
Now let's test out our font, to make sure we got the right spacing and keys for our glyphs. Go back to the Home panel, by clicking the Home tab on the top left of the Fontself panel.
Next, click the Install button in the Fontself Maker panel. This will install our font locally into Illustrator only, so we can test it some more and edit where needed. All the glyphs will be saved in an OpenType-SVG font, which means they will be visible only in Photoshop 2017+, InDesign 2019+, and Illustrator CC 2018+.
Give the font the Name: MonoPixel. Then go back to Illustrator.
Select the Type tool from the Tools panel, and our Font Family: MonoPixel from theCharacter tab in the top panel menu.
If you find an error and want to replace a glyph, then you need to delete the glyph from the Fontself panel, before adding and installing it again. This will place your new glyph at the bottom of the Fontself window. I personally prefer just to delete the set and reload them all again, so they are in order.
Step 6
Get back to the Fontself Maker panel, and click on the Font Info tab to set the name of the font and add other details if you like. I called my 'MonoPixel' font style: 'Awesome'.
Step 7
Once you have tried and tested the MonoPixel font and are ready to export your font outside Illustrator, get back on the Fontself Maker, in the Home panel, and click the Catapult button.
Fontself Catapult is a one-click easy solution to host your color fonts online.It will generate an OpenType file (OTF) that you can save, install, and use in OTF supporting software, web or mobile!
A window will open to give you the option to view your font on the web. Choose Firefox or Safari; they support OpenType-SVG color.
By default, your font will be private until you Publish it, and then you can have your monospace font download.

Here we’ll sift through the tech jargon and get to the simple truth of color fonts. This unashamedly in-your-face trend promises to put the fun back into typography. A must-know for web and graphic designers alike, this nifty new technology will have a transformative effect on digital and print design for years to come. So don’t get left behind, and read on!
If you want to use highly detailed type on a design, you have to use a vector or raster image of a letter or group of letters. Whether created from scratch by typography artists or downloaded from a stock site, these images are time-consuming to make and don’t have the functionality or flexibility of a font file.
At least that was the case until now. Color fonts, sometimes referred to as chromatic fonts, represent the next evolutionary step for typography, incorporating details like color, gradients, and textures into a font file, in either vector or bitmap format. Vector details look clear and sharp however large they are scaled, while bitmap color fonts can look pixelated or blurry when scaled to a size greater than their intended maximum size.
Each color font is made up of a ‘fallback’ core, which is the standard OpenType vector font, plus additional data tagged on which is rendered in SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) format. Amongst font developers, color fonts are referred to as OpenType-SVG fonts.

Color fonts tread a shaky line between good and bad taste, but somehow they feel exactly spot on for right now. They're making their appearance alongside a revival for all things retro in design, as well as a new maximalist mood across all design fields, from fashion to interiors. Color fonts don’t take themselves too seriously and are instantly engaging, and that’s what makes them particularly attractive to designers and marketers looking to entice the fickle, tech-obsessed millennial market.
Above all, color fonts are fun! While early color fonts have been designed with websites and apps primarily in mind, they also have the potential to offer something youthful and fresh to print design too. You can’t use a color font without cracking a smile, which is perhaps what designers and consumers are craving in these politically and socially uncertain times.
OK, So Where Can I Use Them?
Because color fonts are such a new technology, many browsers, devices, and software programs are yet to catch up. You might not be able to view color fonts on some browsers—you'll only be able to view the standard OpenType version instead.
However, this is likely to change very soon. OpenType-SVG fonts have been declared an industry standard for color fonts, which means that browsers and software will probably update rapidly to facilitate them. You can currently view color fonts on more recent versions of Firefox (from version 26) and Microsoft Edge (from version 38 on Windows 10).
As for using color fonts on design software, Adobe is ahead of the curve, with designers able to view and apply color fonts using the newest incarnations of Illustrator (CC 2018), Photoshop (CC 2017), and InDesign (CC 2018).
Some type designers are also experimenting with animated versions of color fonts. Gilbert, a rainbow color font created by Fontself, is usable in Adobe After Effects.

I’m a Color Font Convert! But How Should I Use Them?
If you’ve been bitten by the color font bug, it can be tempting to throw out all your old fonts and go a bit crazy. Before you create designs which resemble a bad acid trip, take into consideration these tips and pointers for making the most of this new typography trend.
As with standard fonts, some are notably better than others. Just because you can use a color font doesn’t mean you necessarily should. Be mindful of the limitations of color fonts. If you have your heart set on a bitmap font, it’s advisable not to use this at a larger scale than was intended by the font designer. So, for example, a bitmap color font might look great on a printed flyer set to the right size, but it might look much less polished on a responsive web design that involves scaling content to a large size on desktops.
It’s also worth keeping in mind that color fonts are heavier than their OpenType relatives, due to the extra amount of data they carry. They aren’t always huge (for example, the Bixa Color font carries an extra 30kB on top of the regular font file size), but it can affect the loading time of websites and apps. By all means use your color fonts with abandon, but don’t allow liberal use to affect the user’s experience of your design.
If you want to use color fonts for web design, you should also take into account the possibility that it may be a long time before most visitors will be able to view the fonts as you intended. It may be many months or years before individuals choose to update or switch browsers, and most will not be aware of the pressing need to do this in relation to color font viewing. With this in mind, you need to make sure that your font looks as good in its ‘fallback’ format as it does in color.
Because color fonts are overtly loud and garish, they can push a design into distasteful territory. For some designs, particularly apps aimed at a younger market, this can be a bonus! Adobe’s color font Typekit page instantly provokes that love-it-or-hate-it reaction to excessive web design. Other designers might prefer to balance a color font with more pared-back type or black-and-white images on the rest of the layout, or use a color font as the sole focus of an otherwise clean and simple design.
Pairing color fonts with cleaner elements on your designs will help layouts feel more balanced, as demonstrated in this example using the Popsky color font, designed by Igor Petrovic.
