Enable the Grid (View > Show Grid) and the Snap to Grid (View > Snap to Grid). You will need a grid every 10 px, so simply go to Edit > Preferences > Guides & Grid, and enter 10 in the Gridline every box and 1 in the Subdivisions box. Try not to get discouraged by all that grid—it will make your work easier, and keep in mind that you can easily enable or disable it using the Control-" keyboard shortcut.
You should also open the Info panel (Window > Info) for a live preview with the size and position of your shapes. Don't forget to set the unit of measurement to pixels from Edit > Preferences > Units. All these options will significantly increase your work speed. Now that everything's prepared, let's see how you can use an SVG calligraphic font and how to change the color of an SVG font in this circle logo design.
2. How to Use and Edit an SVG Calligraphy Font
Step 1
Pick the Type Tool and open the Character panel (Window > Character). Select the Bluesky SVG font and set the size to 200 px. Simply click on your artboard and type in the "Silky" piece of text.
Step 2
Let's replace some of the characters from the "Silky" text with different glyphs. Make sure that the Type Tool (T) is still active, and select only the "k". Once it's selected, you will get small previews with the SVG font glyph alternatives for that character. Select the fourth option, and the style of your selected character will change as shown in the second image.
Step 3
Keep focusing on your piece of text and select the "k" character. For a larger preview with the whole SVG font glyph collection available for this SVG calligraphy font, open the Glyphs window (Type > Glyphs). Replace the current design of that "y" character with the SVG font glyph shown in the following image.
Step 4
Make sure that your piece of text stays selected, and open the Align panel (Window > Align). Set the alignment to artboard, and then click the Horizontal Align Center and Vertical Align Center buttons to easily move your selection to the center of the artboard.
3. How to Create the Main Logo Shape Around the SVG Calligraphy Font
Step 1
Pick the Ellipse Tool (L), hold down the Shift key, and create a 350 px circle—the grid and the Snap to Grid feature will make it a lot easier.
Open the Gradient panel (Window > Gradient). Make sure that your shape stays selected, fill it with the linear gradient shown in the following image, and remove the stroke color.
Center this circle using the same Horizontal Align Center and Vertical Align Center buttons from the Align panel, and then send it behind the text (Control-[).
Step 2
Make sure that your circle stays selected, focus on the Appearance panel (Window > Appearance), and add a second fill using the Add New Fill button.
Select the new fill and drag it below that other fill. Set its color to black (R=0 G=0 B=0), lower the Opacity to 30%, and go to Effect > Path > Offset Path. Enter a -20 px Offset, click OK, and go to Effect > Distort & Transform > Transform. Drag the Move-Vertical slider to 40 px, click OK, and go to Effect > Blur > Gaussian Blur. Enter a 15 px Radius and click OK.
Step 3
Make sure that your circle stays selected and keep focusing on the Appearance panel (Window > Appearance).
Select the stroke, set its color to white (R=255 G=255 B=255), and then click that Stroke piece of text to open the Stroke fly-out menu. Increase the Weight to 10 px and check the Align Stroke to Outside button.
4. How to Stylize the SVG Calligraphy Font
Step 1
Select your "Silky" piece of text and focus on the Appearance panel. Add a new fill and drag it to the bottom of the panel. Select it, set the color to white, and then go to Effect > Path > Offset Path. Enter a 10 px Offset, set the Joins to Round, and click OK.
Step 2
Select your "Silky" piece of text and add a copy in front (Control-C > Control-F).
Select the copy and go to Object > Expand Appearance. Make sure that the resulting group stays selected, open the Pathfinder panel (Window > Pathfinder), and click the Unite button. Fill the resulting shape with black and then remove that unnecessary piece of text from the Layers panel (Window > Layers). Only keep the original "Silky" piece of text.
Step 3
Make sure that your black shape is still selected, and go to Effect > Path > Offset Path. Enter a -5 px Offset, click OK, and go to Effect > Distort & Transform > Transform. Drag the Move-Vertical slider to 25 px, click OK, and then go to Object > Expand Appearance.
Step 4
Select your blue circle and add a copy in front (Control-C > Control-F).
Select this copy along with that black shape, and click the Intersect button from the Pathfinder panel. Move the resulting shape behind your "Silky" text (Control-[), lower its Opacity to 75%, and change the Blending Mode to Soft Light.
5. How to Add Text on a Path
Step 1
Using the Ellipse Tool (L), create a 260 px circle and center it using the same Horizontal Align Center and Vertical Align Center buttons from the Align panel. The appearance attributes of this new shape don't matter as you're simply going to use this shape as a path to type on.
Make sure that this new shape stays selected, pick the Type on a Path Tool, and go to the Character panel.
Select the Robinson font, set the size to 32 px and the tracking to 200. Simply click on the edge of your selected circle and add the "- TAILOR SALON -" text. Set its color to white and switch to the Direct Selection Tool (A). Use that center bracket to drag the text as shown in the second image.
Step 2
Using the Ellipse Tool (L), create a 280 px circle and center it. Again, don't bother with the appearance attributes of this shape. Make sure that it stays selected, switch to the Type on a Path Tool, and lower the tracking to 100 in the Character panel.
Click on the edge of your selection and add the "- ESTD 1991 -" text. Switch to the Direct Selection Tool (A) and move that center bracket to the inside of your circle to move your text to the inside. Drag the text as shown in the second image.
6. How to Create a Stylized Needle
Step 1
Pick the Rectangle Tool (R) and create an 870 px square. Center it and then fill it with the linear gradient shown below.
Step 2
For the following steps, you will need a grid every 5 px. Just go to Edit > Preferences > Guides & Grid and enter 5 in the Gridline every box.
Pick the Rectangle Tool (R), create a 15 x 530 px shape, and fill it with white. Focus on the bottom side of this new shape and pick the Direct Selection Tool (A). Select both anchor points and go to Object > Path > Average. Check the Both box and click OK.
Step 3
Move to the top side of this white shape and make sure that the Direct Selection Tool (A) is still active. Select both anchor points and enter 8 px in the Corners box from the control panel.
Switch to the Move Tool (V), select this entire white shape, and go to Effect > Warp > Bulge. Enter the attributes shown in the following image, click OK, and then go to Object > Expand Appearance.
Step 4
Using the Rectangle Tool (R), create a 5 x 40 px shape and place it as shown in the first image. Make sure that it stays selected, go to the control panel, and enter 2.5 px in the Corners box.
Select this rounded rectangle along with that white shape, and click the Minus Front button from the Pathfinder panel.
Step 5
Rotate that needle shape and place it as shown in the following image.
Step 6
Pick the Ellipse Tool (L) and create a 320 px circle. Fill it with black and center it.
Select this new circle along with that needle shape and open the Transparency panel (Window > Transparency). Click the Make Mask button and then uncheck that Clip box. In the end, things should look like in the third image.
Step 7
Pick the Pen Tool (P) and add two oblique paths where the needle enters and exits the logo, as shown in the following image.
Add 3 px stroke for the top path and a 2 px stroke for the bottom path. Set the color to white and apply Width Profile 1 from the Profile drop-down menu.
7. How to Change the Color of an SVG Font in Illustrator
Step 1
Once added, you might want to know how to change the color of the SVG font. It can be done in two simple steps. Select your "Silky" piece of text, focus on the Appearance panel, and add a second fill using that same Add New Fill button.
Select this new fill, set the color to black, and drag it to the top of the panel. This will not change the appearance of your text as it should. In order to make that fill visible, we will use a little trick. Make sure that your black fill is still selected, and go to Effect > Path > Offset Path. Set the Offset to 0 px and click OK. This will not change the span of the fill, but it will make it visible. Now that you can see this black fill, change its Blending Mode to Color.

If you convert text to a shape in Illustrator, you can no longer edit it as text, but you get something else in return: total freedom in reshaping and styling the outlines. In this tutorial, I'll show you how to vectorize text in Illustrator, and how to solve a certain problem that can happen in the process.
Here's how to convert text to a shape in Illustrator. First, create a New Document. You can use any size you wish.
Step 2
Use the Type Tool (T) to add your text. Adjust its size and placement, and select a pretty font.
Step 3
If you want to make the text more interesting, go to Type > Glyphs and replace some of the letters with their variations.
Step 4
Make sure you've done everything you wanted with the text—once you convert the text to a path, you won’t be able to edit it. In case you change your mind later, it’s good to have a copy of the text before you convert it to outlines. Open the Layers panel, open its menu, and select Duplicate Layer. Hide the original.
Step 5
Now I'll show youhow to vectorize text in Illustrator. Select the text and go to Type > Create Outlines.
Step 6
In many cases, this will give you the result you want, but sometimes you need one more step. Can you see how these paths cross each other? Let’s remove them. Go to Window > Pathfinder, select your outlines, and select Unite. This will give the text a more unified look.
Step 7
Once you've turned your text to outlines, you can treat it like any other vector shape—you can take the Direct Selection Tool (A) and drag the anchor points around to give the letters a unique look.
Step 8
If your letters aren’t joined by design, you can also move them separately. Just select the text and go to Object > Ungroup. Everything outlined by a single path will be treated as a separate shape.
Step 9
Because your text is a shape now, you can easily add a stroke to it on the inside or outside. Compare it to what would happen if the text were still text: the stroke would be added to the crossing paths, and you’d have no other option than to center it. So even though turning text into curves means you can no longer edit it as text, it also gives you more freedom in editing the text as a shape.
Good Job!
Now you know how to convert text to a shape in Illustrator.

If you want to learn how to draw a line in Photoshop CC, in this short tutorial I’ll show you the popular methods to draw many types of lines—for example, how to draw a straight line, a curved line, or a dashed line.
What You'll Learn in This Photoshop Tutorial
How to draw a straight line in Photoshop
How to draw a curved line in Photoshop
How to draw a vertical/horizontal line in Photoshop
How to draw a line at any angle in Photoshop
How to change the thickness and color of the line in Photoshop
I'll show you how to draw a straight line in Photoshop first. The easiest way is to use the tool designed for this purpose: the Line Tool (U):
Step 2
Set its Mode to Pixels.
Step 3
Then simply click and drag to draw a straight line at any angle.
Step 4
You can also use the Brush Tool (B). Click where you want your line to start, hold Shift, and click the end point of the line. Photoshop will draw it for you!
These lines use your current brush as a base
2. How to Draw a Broken Line in Photoshop
Ok, but how do you draw a broken line in Photoshop? You can use the same method for this purpose. If you click first, and then press Shift, you’ll draw an individual straight line. But if you keep holding Shift and click again, the end point of the previous line will become the start point of the new one. So, remember the order: click and press Shift for a separate line, press Shift and click for a continuous broken line.
Now let me show you how to draw a 90-degree line in Photoshop. The Shift key is also useful here. Hold Shift and start drawing to the left or right to draw a horizontal line, and up or down to draw a vertical line. Photoshop will straighten them for you.
4. How to Draw a Curved Line in Photoshop
Step 1
So that was a straight line, but how do you draw a curved line in Photoshop? Of course, you can use the Brush Tool (B) to simply draw any line you want, but if you don’t have a graphics tablet, it may be difficult to control its shape. Let’s use the Curvature Pen Tool (P) instead.
How do you draw a curved line in Photoshop with a mouse? You could use the Brush Tool, but...
Step 2
The Curvature Pen Tool is hidden under the Pen Tool menu:
Step 3
Set its Mode to Shape, remove the Fill, add a color to the Stroke, and adjust the thickness of the line.
Step 4
This tool allows you to draw a curved line by clicking and dragging. The
best thing about it is that the line stays fully editable—just click
and drag any of its points to modify its shape. Control-click to finish drawing, and use the Direct Selection Tool (A) to select the line again.
... the Curvature Pen Tool is much better for this purpose!
You can learn more about using the Curvature Pen Tool here:
Here's how to draw a dashed line in Photoshop. If you click the line next to the Stroke thickness, you’ll see a couple of presets—dashed lines included.
Step 2

Want to get into digital scrapbooking, but not sure where to start? Or maybe you're already in the digital scrapbooking game, but you'd love some extra tips, tricks, and inspiration.
From entirely digital scrapbooking templates to downloading and printing kits for your traditional pages, digital tools can be a total game changer. Let's take a look at some of the ins and outs of creating and working with scrapbook content digitally and learn how to become a digital scrapbook designer.
What Is Digital Scrapbooking?
Capture Memories and Moments
Have you ever wondered what digital scrapbooking is? Digital scrapbooking, much like traditional, paper-based scrapbooking, involves reworking, rearranging, and designing elements into a composition that is typically photo-centric. The thing that separates digital scrapbooking from traditional scrapbooking is the use of digital tools to compose and/or create parts or all of your work.
You won't have to worry about glue, scissors, clean-up, or even making a mistake—with digital tools, we can easily undo any misstep. We can retouch photos, we can adjust colors, and we can reposition stickers, over and over again, without any consequences! Imagine digital scrapbooking stitches without the needle, and printable scrapbook paper, customized for your project!
Not only that—you can save your work for a lifetime, without worrying about aging photos or weathering paper.
So let's jump right into the nitty gritty—what are the basics things you need if you want to get into digital scrapbooking and learn how to become a digital scrapbook designer?
Your Computer—you're going to need a computer to get the most out of digital scrapbooking. While there is a lot we can do on tablets and mobile devices today, computers are still the best option when it comes to your software and having full control of your design work.
Photographs and Imagery—just like in traditional scrapbooking, you're going to need images, and they need to be accessible to your computer. For example, you could use your smartphone or digital camera to take photos. You could also use a scanner to import photos.
Photo Editing Software—think of this like your tools. Your photo editing software is where you'll make the magic happen—arranging, editing, copying, and pasting work to create your scrapbook layouts.
Each artist's preference is going to vary here. Some folks might prefer one software, while others prefer another. Think about what kind of features and outcome are most important for you. For example, do you want a setup that's beginner friendly? Are you looking for something with a lot of power and flexibility?
Keep in mind, however, that digital scrapbooking is not only about working on a computer! You can also download digital scrapbook pages and learn about printing digital scrapbooks.
If you're like me, you love paper. I love the way paper feels in my hands, I love the way it folds, and I love working with it. I do a lot of digital work, but it doesn't replace the magic of working with real, tangible media—and it doesn't have to, either! In fact, digital scrapbooking can be a wonderful complement to your traditional scrapbooking projects.
For example:
You can print out digital scrapbook pages and elements, like decorative flourishes, stickers, accents, tabs, and more. Not only that, you can customize them to your liking! There are many printable scrapbook pages.
You can print textures, patterns, and papers. I love buying books of scrapbooking paper, but it's also fun to search online for inspiring papers to use in projects. Again, you can also make your own printable scrapbook pages!
You can plan your digital scrapbook pages in advance. Lay it out digitally so you have a guideline when working with your supplies.
You can also print out your digital scrapbook pages. This leaves them entirely digitally preserved, and you can easily share copies of digital scrapbook albums with others, too!
And that's just the beginning! Digital tools can bring all kinds of fun and different options to your real media based projects.
The possibilities here honestly go on and on. You could easily email your scrapbooking pages to family members. Create birthday cards out of a mini digital scrapbooking page. You could even monetize your scrapbooking interests and make your own digital scrapbooking kits—either digital or printed materials!
When it comes to software, there are a few recommendations you're likely to see over and over again. The two big players tend to be Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Photoshop Elements.
You'll see Adobe Photoshop referred to as "Adobe Photoshop", "Photoshop", and "Adobe Photoshop CC". If you see titles like "Adobe Photoshop CS6", this is referring to an older version of the software.
So, what's the big deal about Photoshop? We even hear folks use phrases like "that looks Photoshopped", it's such a commonplace word.
Well, Photoshop is a really powerful photo editing tool—and more. It's for photo manipulation. It's for design work. It's for drawing and painting. It's often considered an industry leader when it comes to art and design. There are a lot of things you can do in Photoshop, beyond digital scrapbooking.
If you're looking for a really robust, professional tool that can do a lot of things, Photoshop might be just what you're looking for. Keep in mind, however, that it can have a steep learning curve, and it requires a monthly subscription fee. Prepare to invest time in learning the software.
Adobe Photoshop Elements, on the other hand, is often considered more beginner friendly. It has fewer features than big brother Photoshop, but you might not need all of Photoshop's features.
But that's not to say that Elements isn't still powerful in its own right. You can create and manipulate high-resolution work. You can still, for example, use Photoshop's layer styles, adjust colors, create layouts, and more! Elements 2020 even has automatic colorization for older photos, user-friendly collage tools, and slideshows.
Instead of a subscription, Elements has a one-time fee—which is also a big perk.
But there are other options out there, too! Just because some options are the most popular doesn't mean that they're the right fit for you.
For example, Affinity Photo is often considered a noteworthy Photoshop competitor. If you're already familiar with Photoshop or other image editing software, you might want to give Affinity a look. It's competitively priced and has a one-time fee.
Want to see an overview of some Photoshop competitors? Check out this list of Adobe Alternatives by Kezz Bracey—it's a great list!
But how do you really know which software is best? Thankfully, most of these options have a free trial—I highly recommend taking advantage of this! Make a list of software you'd like to try, their prices, and which have a free trial. Then, give them a go, and take note of which resonates with you most!
Now that we've taken a look at some of the technical stuff, let's dig into some of the possibilities!
Even if you don't necessarily want to create your layouts digitally, digital tools can allow you to edit printable scrapbook pages—from your photos to your paper to text elements.
For example, maybe you found just the right paper, but the color isn't right. A simple tweak in Photoshop can change our paper's color from red to blue.
Instead of going to your favorite arts and crafts store, you can go online, look for digital scrapbooking downloads, and then print them out! Voila, you can be printing digital scrapbooks and have scrapbooking supplies at your fingertips. On a rainy day, when I don't want to go outside, this absolutely hits the spot.
In addition, digital scrapbooking projects are hardly "trapped" on your computer. You can print them out, frame them, and put them in a book! You can also create your own digital scrapbook albums.
One of my favorite digital scrapbooking supplies is digital scrapbook paper. There are so many beautiful patterns, textures, and papers out there—and digital tools really further empower independent creators. From fanciful florals to detailed patterns, there is a seemingly endless supply of papers out there to choose from, whereas brick-and-mortar retail options largely depend on the stock at hand.
That's not to say I don't enjoy shopping for paper locally—but it's super fun to discover hidden gems online. Not only that, but it's hard not to want to get in on the fun. Have you ever considered making digital scrapbook pages of your own?
And that's really one of the biggest deals here: digital tools mean even more custom content for your digital scrapbook albums.
Not only that, but you can potentially monetize your work, too! Create fun digital scrapbooking content, package it together, and put it up for sale on one of the many online platforms out there. Sounds fun, right?
And we can explore and search for unique, indie artist finds—independent artists and creators who love scrapbooking, creating kits, and sharing them. You can really find some unusual digital scrapbooking downloads out there—and support independent creators who also share a love for scrapbooking!
Using both digital scrapbooking techniques and traditional scrapbooking techniques together is sometimes referred to as "hybrid scrapbooking"—a flexible marriage between the two!
Personally, this is my favorite way to approach my physical scrapbooking projects nowadays. I love paper, I love texture, and I love holding my work in my hands. However, digital tools offer me a world of flexibility, beyond the stock at my favorite art store. If a particular paper or pattern isn't in stock—or doesn't even exist—I can make it, print it, and use it. I can create digital scrapbooking shapes, digital scrapbook tags, or digital scrapbooking stitches.
Next, let's look at how to use digital scrapbook templates. How do you create your own digital scrapbook page? Where do you start? Let's take a look at the process.
Here's an example of a digital scrapbook page that I worked on in Adobe Photoshop. This is a snapshot of my process before it was complete, to give you a feel for my workflow. You could use all sorts of digital scrapbooking shapes in your design!
A Finished Digital Scrapbook Template
And here's how my scrapbook page turned out! It's a fully functional template too, so I can easily swap out the images for any other photo I might like. I can also remix and rearrange the contents, potentially giving me an entire series of matching pages.
Sharing Your Digital Scrapbook Projects
Important to Know: Resolution
Let's talk about printing digital scrapbooks. Generally speaking, if you want to print your work, 300 dots per inch (dpi) tends to be a good recommendation for your image resolution. I like to work a little higher because you can always size down, but not up, when it comes to raster imagery.
We're looking for high-quality printable scrapbook pages. Raster imagery is pixel specific, meaning that if you enlarge a raster image, it gets blurry. If we size down, however, we don't lose quality.
We could have a whole separate tutorial on resolution, honestly. For the purposes of this article, keep the following in mind:
Dots per inch refer to the number of dots printed per inch. So a high-resolution photo, for example, would have more dots printed per inch than a low-resolution photo—it would affect the quality of your print.
When it comes to the web and sharing digital content, it may be more advantageous to focus on pixel dimensions. For example, my iPhone's wallpaper size is 1920x1080 pixels. If I wanted to use my scrapbook page as a phone wallpaper, I would need to keep these dimensions in mind.
12" high by 12" wide, at 300 dpi, is a common size and resolution for digital scrapbooking pages and papers. This would be appropriate for printing. This is, however, 3600x3600 pixels, which might be rather large for web-based, digital-only sharing.
I love printing at home because it's easy and quick! However, keep in mind that many consumer printers aren't necessarily equipped to create high-resolution prints. That means that when you try to print out a photo, the quality might look grainy or dull.
There are two big factors to consider when it comes to printing digital scrapbooks at home:
The quality of your printer. Can your printer, for example, print quality photographs? Check your printer's manual to find out more about its specifications. If you're looking to buy a new printer, make sure it's equipped to print things like photographs and higher quality prints. In addition, keep note of what size prints your printer can make. For example, I have a large format printer, so I can print up to 13"x19".
The quality of your paper. The nicest printer in the world isn't going to make a great print if the paper isn't right for the job. For example, imagine printing a high-res photograph on computer paper, rather than on thick, glossy photo paper. It just wouldn't turn out right—the ink would bleed, because the paper would be too thin.
Personally, I prefer luster or matte photo paper, because glossy is a little too shiny for my tastes, especially if I'm printing an entire scrapbook page. Test out different papers and see which ones you prefer!
If you don't have a high-quality printer at home, or you just want to have a professional print your work, you might want to consider seeking out a professional printer. There are tons of options out there—check for local shops, but online vendors can be great too!
Here are some questions that you may want to ask when working with a professional printer:
Do you offer short run printing? "Short run" generally means low quantities—as in, you only want a few books, not a commercial run of books (up in the hundreds or thousands of books).
What binding options do you have? Perfect bound is a softbound, paperback book, and might be perfect for your project. Spiral bound is another common type, which is more like a "ringed notebook". Hardcover can be quite classy, but is often more expensive.
Ask about document sizing, resolution, and bleed. Your document size is going to be the size of your book. If you already have dimensions in mind, make sure to let your printer know when asking questions. The bleed refers to the area outside of your document—if you have full-page images, you may need to work with a bleed to ensure your images go to the edge of the page, after trimming.
What file type should I prepare for you? Your printer will let you know what file type to deliver to them, as well as how to do so. This might involve uploading your work onto their site or delivering a file to them in person.
Ask about the paper. Remember, the paper quality matters!
A good, professional printer will be happy to help and answer your questions. Arm yourself with knowledge, and don't be afraid to ask for a proof—a paid, test print—to make sure everything is just right!
But you don't have to print your digital scrapbook—in fact, you can avoid printing or any printed material entirely, if you'd like to!
When sharing your digital scrapbook albums, I recommend saving and distributing your work at smaller sizes, unless you intend for others to print your work. Why? Lower quality, smaller imagery generally means lower file sizes. That means quicker sending and less space it will take up on devices. It might be a strong idea to save a high-quality, larger version, but then share a smaller one, for convenience.
And we can, of course, share our digital scrapbooking projects online! This can be a very user-friendly, easy way to share our creations with family and friends.
When doing so, keep the following, web-friendly file types in mind: JPG and PNG. There are other file types, but these two are most likely the best fit for sharing your finalized scrapbook pages.
One of my favorite aspects of having digital tools for scrapbooking is: I can make my own assets! I can make my own scrapbooking kits with any theme under the sun, no matter how obscure the theme—because digital tools give me the means to do so.
This applies to both digital and traditional scrapbooking, too! For example, I wanted some stickers that looked like clothing buttons, but I just couldn't find any. So I took some photos of buttons and turned them into printable, digital stickers! Voila! It's easy to make digital scrapbooking shapes and digital scrapbook tags.
Scan and Use
If you're like me, you have some precious old photos that just feel super priceless. They're irreplaceable to me, especially the ones my grandmother gave me that are quickly approaching 100 years old.
Scanning your photos is not only an amazing way to preserve treasured photos, but also to utilize them in your scrapbooking projects without worrying about cutting or gluing them to a page. Now, you can reuse them, as many times as you like, worry free—and with a digital copy that will remain safe for a lifetime.
I generally recommend a flatbed scanner for photographs. When deciding on a scanner, make sure to keep an eye on resolution, as we discussed earlier, especially if you plan to print your work. Not all scanners are created equal; your scanner should be able to scan at a resolution appropriate for the goals of your projects.
Digital scrapbooking kits are awesome—they typically come with papers, patterns, textures, and decorative elements, all working within a given aesthetic or theme. They are such a fun choice, especially when you're looking for just the right set of items for a special occasion, season, or holiday.
That's one of the best parts of working with a kit—you generally get a whole package deal, rather than having to search for matching items to create a layout design.
Make sure to check the resolution and/or image sizing of any digital kit you might purchase, to make sure it'll work for your project.
I love stickers, but I never want to "stick" them on things, know what I mean?
Digital tools not only solve that problem—they open a world of possibilities. For example, I have a consumer die cutting machine (they tend to run in the US$200 price range). It means I can take any digital paper, texture, or photo and turn it into a sticker sheet, ready to stick on any traditional scrapbook page. Need another sheet? Just print and cut another one!
But we can push that even further. With the magic of software, you can "place" your digital scrapbooking shapes right on your layout. No glue, no loss of "stickiness", nothing like that. Move and adjust your assets all you want, without damaging the sticker or the paper.
Walking down the scrapbook aisle at my favorite art store is definitely a joy. There are usually so many nifty little elements to look at—ribbon, confetti, tabs, labels, stamps—all kinds of items and digital scrapbook tags with texture and personality.
One of my favorite things about working digitally is the ability to create your own elements. How about using the stub from your plane ticket as your own custom embellishment in your layout—while still preserving the original. No need to cut it or paste it to anything. Receipts, postage, letters, report cards, and other memory-filled items suddenly have the power to become reusable assets for your creative experimentation.
Keep in mind, just because an image is on the Internet and you can save it, doesn't mean it's free to use—especially for commercial usage (meaning, work you intend to sell or distribute). A good rule of thumb is: respect content creators the way you'd want your content to be respected.
But this does leave us with a problem: how do we find content to use in our projects?
One idea is to search primarily for royalty free or public domain imagery. For example, I like to keep a little bank of free imagery on my computer, that I know I can use for any project—personal, professional, or otherwise—without worrying about copyright concerns.
Sometimes, however, you can't find exactly what you're looking for in a public domain search. There can be a lot of benefits in using a paid service for your image (and other multimedia) needs—benefits such as professional service and finding everything you need, all in one place.
For example, Envato Elements offers a monthly subscription for a low fee. You get thousands and thousands of assets, like images, graphics, fonts, and more at your disposal. Honestly, I use this service regularly for my freelance work, my professional work, and even my holiday cards. As a creative professional, having assets at hand just makes everything easier.

Welcome to this Affinity Designer tutorial, in which you'll learn everything you need to know about Affinity Designer brushes, from how to create and install brushes to how to use Photoshop and Illustrator brushes in Affinity Designer. You'll also learn where you can find Affinity Designer halftone brushes and other valuable design resources. Let’s jump straight into it!
What You Will Learn in This Affinity Designer Tutorial
How to open the Affinity Designer Brushes panel
How to set up and use vector Affinity brushes
How to create your own vector brushes in Affinity Designer
How to set up and use raster brushes in Affinity Designer
How to create your own raster brushes in Affinity Designer
How to install or save Affinity brush packs
How to use Photoshop or Illustrator brushes in Affinity Designer
1. How to Open the Affinity Designer Brushes Panel
Step 1
So, first of all, we need to open the AffinityBrushes Panel. To do it, just go to View > Studio > Brushes.
Step 2
Now you can see the standard Affinity brushes and different categories of presets such as Affinity Designer watercolor brushes, acrylic brushes, and much more.
2. How to Set Up and Use Vector Brushes in Affinity Designer
Step 1
So, to create a brushstroke, you should just hit B to activate the Brush tool and create a stroke with any brush you like.
Step 2
You could also change the settings of the brush: just Right Click on the brush and then select Edit Brush. Let's change the Brush Size to 50, the Size Variance to 100%, and the Opacity Variance to 90%. You could also adjust the outline of the brush using the sliders at the bottom of the Edit Brush Panel.
Step 3
If you don't have a digital pen, you could easily change the pressure settings manually. Go to View > Studio > Stroke, open the Pressure tab, and just change the Points of the graph.
Step 4
Another great option here is that you could activate the Stabilizer function and your brushstrokes will be much smoother, as you can see in the picture below:
Step 5
Also, you could change the Blending Mode of the brushstrokes not only in the Layer Panel (by changing the Blending Mode of the layer) but in the brush settings. Let's create a few red strokes and then change the Blending Mode of the brush to Color Dodge and create a few orange strokes above.
Step 6
Besides that, you could add a brushstroke around any shape. Let's create a shape in the center of the document and then add a Brush Stroke around the shape just by selecting any of the brushes while your shape is still selected in the Layers Panel.
3. How to Create Your Own Vector Brush Affinity Designer Packs
Step 1
Let's now try to create our own brushes for Affinity Designer. In the Brush Panel, click on the icon in the top-right corner, and here you'll see three options: New Solid Brush, New Textured Intensity Brush, and New Textured Image Brush.
What's the difference between these brushes? New Solid Brush just creates a simple stroke brush with no textures/colors or images applied to it. New Textured Intensity Brush creates a brush with a texture from a PNG file. New Textured Image Brush allows you to copy the image with the colors of the original PNG file.
In the example below, you can see the difference between these brushes. So you could easily create your own Affinity Designer assets using these three options.
Step 2
Let's create a New Textured Image Brush. Select the green watercolor PNG file from the attachment, and then change the settings of the brush strokes to the following:
Brush Size: 50 px
Size Variance: 35%
Head Offset: 80 px
Tail Offset: 400 px
Step 3
Draw a stroke with the brush we've just created, and after that let's try another great option. Go to the Brush Settings and change the Body settingto Repeat.
So now, your brush stroke will create copies of the PNG image you opened as a textured image.
4. How to Use Raster Brushes in Affinity Designer
Step 1
Let's move to the part of our Affinity Designer tutorial where we will take a look at the raster Affinity Designer brushes. So, to switch to raster mode, you need to press that button in the top-left corner. Once you've pressed it, you can see the different raster brushes. I especially love the Affinity Designer watercolor brushes section here, as it gives you these realistic and handmade-looking brushstrokes.
Step 2
Let's take a look at the cool option of raster brushes in Affinity Designer. In the top settings panel of the brushes, put a tick on Symmetry and change the Symmetry Number to 4. So now, when you draw one stroke, Affinity will automatically create four symmetrical copies of your main brushstrokes. As you can see in the example below, you could create cool ornaments or patterns with almost no effort.
5. How to Create Your Own Raster Brushes in Affinity Designer
Step 1
Let's take one of the Affinity Designer watercolor brushes and create a stroke with it to see what it looks like.
Step 2
Now you can set up Affinity Designer brushes to suit your needs. Just Right Click on any of the Affinity Designer brushes and select Edit Brush. After that, let's change some of the settings to the following:
Accumulation: 50%
Spacing: 25%
Flow: 25%
After that, go to the Dynamics tab and use the following settings:
Size Jitter: 70%
Scatter Y: 80%
Hue: 15
Saturation: 20%
Step 3
What's I really like about Affinity brushes is that you get not only the dynamics and general settings of the brush, but you can also add textures and sub-brush layers (it's pretty similar to Photoshop textures and dual brush functions). Let's add a texture from the attachment. Go to Texture, and then hit the Set Texture button and select the Texture PNG from the attachment.
This is what our brushstrokes look like now. As you can see, we can easily make new brushes from the standard Affinity Designer assets by adding our own textures.
6. How to Install or Save Raster or Vector Brush Packs in Affinity Designer
Step 1
If you've bought or downloaded some brushes for Affinity Designer, you can install them in the following way: In the Brushes Panel, click on the top-right corner icon, select Import Brushes, and then select the brushes you want to install.
Step 2
If you want to save the brushes you've created to share them with your colleagues or friends, press the same button again and select Export Brushes.
7. How to Use Photoshop or Illustrator Brushes as Affinity Designer Assets
Step 1
Let's now learn how to use Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator brushes in Affinity Designer. Create a new document with 500 x 500px size and a black background in Photoshop.
Step 2
Create a white stroke on a new layer using the brush you want to convert for use in Affinity.
Step 3
Select the area around your brushstroke with the Rectangular Marquee Tool, and then go to Image > Crop.
Step 4
After that, go to File > Save As and select the PNG file format.
Step 5
And finally, create a New Textured Intensity Brush in Affinity and then Right Click > Edit Brush in the Brushes Panel and set it up as you need.
The same technique could be used for Illustrator brushes as well. This is what our exported brush will look like:
Conclusion
There are plenty of useful standard brushes and loads of settings in Affinity Designer that could help you to achieve the desired results for any of your needs. I hope you found some useful information about Affinity Designer brushes today, and feel free to ask anything in the comments below or share your tips and tricks for Affinity Designer.

Learn how to make a mockup without Photoshop by using the online mockup generator at Placeit to create a mockup online.
Mockups are a very effective way of showing a design in its intended form without actually investing any time and money in its production. You don't have to print your design on a T-shirt to see how it looks—you just need a mockup.
But how do you create mockups? For years, designers have been using Photoshop for this task, but it's not necessary anymore. In this short tutorial, I will show you how to make a mockup without Photoshop, in a few simple steps. I'll use a T-shirt mockup and an iPhone mockup as examples.

How to create an iPhone mockup
1. How to Create a T-Shirt Mockup
Step 1
Go to the online mockup tool at Placeit.net. Find the Mockups tab and go to T-Shirt Mockups to create a T-shirt mockup online.
Step 2
Click Upload Your Design Here and select the image you want to see on the templates. Give it a moment to upload. I used this image.
Step 3
When it's uploaded, you'll be asked to crop it. In my case, it looks fine as it is, but you can easily change its size with the slider. When you're ready, click Crop.
Step 4
The online mockup generator will now apply your design to all the templates automatically. The image you have uploaded will be adjusted to each T-shirt in terms of the position, shape, lighting, and even colors.
Now simply scroll through a whole library of mockups presenting your design. If you find one that looks particularly nice to you, just click it to see it better.
Step 5
Here, you can still edit the design as you wish. You can change the color of the T-shirt to see if the design works for other colors, and you can still crop the image differently if you need by clicking this icon. I decided that my image would look better if it was placed slightly higher, so I changed it.
Step 6
If you're happy with how the mockup looks, and you want to show it to the client without the watermark, just scroll up and click the Download button. Here you can purchase the image or download it as a part of your unlimited subscription.

For more inspiration on how to adjust or improve your final text effect, you can find plenty of resources at GraphicRiver. Additionally, if you need some awesome fonts for your nautical logo, check this resource:
Firstly, if you want to know how to design a logo, you should know that designing a logo from scratch in Illustrator can seem a long process, but you'll love the result.
To begin your nautical logo, hit Control-N to create a New Document. Select Pixels from the Units drop-down menu, enter 850 in the Width and Height boxes, and then click that Advanced button. Select RGB for the Color Mode, set the Raster Effects to Screen (72 ppi), and then click Create Document.
Enable the Grid (View > Show Grid) and the Snap to Grid (View > Snap to Grid). You will need a grid every 5 px, so simply go to Edit > Preferences > Guides > Grid, and enter 5 in the Gridline every box and 1 in the Subdivisions box.
2. How to Create the Background and Save a Pattern Brush
Step 1
Pick the Rectangle Tool (M) and focus on your toolbar. Remove the color from the Stroke and then select the Fill and set its color to R=43 G=59 B=84.
Move to your artboard and simply create an 860 px square. Make sure that it covers your entire artboard and then move to the Layers panel (Window > Layers). Expand the existing layer and simply Lock that shape to make sure that you don't accidentally select/move it. Your nautical design style is just starting.
Step 2
Follow this logo design instructions: return to your toolbar and replace the existing Fill color with white. Make sure that the Rectangle Tool (M) is still active and create a 15 x 10 px shape. Focus on the bottom side of this new rectangle and switch to the Direct Selection Tool (A). Select both anchor points and simply drag them 10 px to the right.
Make sure that this white shape stays selected and go to Effect > Stylize > Rounded Corners. Enter a 5 px radius and click OK. Open the Brushes panel (Window > Brushes) and click on New Brush. Check the Pattern Brush box and click OK to open the Pattern Brush Options window. Enter all the attributes shown in the following image and then click the OK button to create your own pattern brush.
3. How to Create Three Concentric Circles
Step 1
You're halfway through designing a logo. Pick the Ellipse Tool (L) and create a 320 px circle. Make sure that it stays selected and focus on the Appearance panel. Be sure that there's no color set for the Fill and then select the Stroke and apply your Pattern Brush from the Brushes panel.
Next, you need to center your circle. Open the Align panel (Window > Align) and select Align to Artboard. If you don't have access to the Align to menu, open the fly-out menu from your Align panel and go to Show Options. Now, make sure that your circle is still selected and then simply click the Horizontal Align Center and Vertical Align Center buttons. This will immediately move your circle to the center of the artboard.
Step 2
For your nautical logo, using the Ellipse Tool (L), create a 300 px circle and center it. Select this new shape and focus on the Appearance panel.
Make sure that there's no color set for the Fill and then select the Stroke. Set its color to white (R=255 G=255 B=255) and then click that Stroke piece of text to open the Stroke fly-out panel. Set the Weight to 5 px and check the Align Stroke to Inside button.
Step 3
Using the Ellipse Tool (L) for your sea logo, create a 280 px circle and center it. Select this new shape and focus on the Appearance panel.
Make sure that there's no color set for the Fill and then select the Stroke. Set its color to white (R=255 G=255 B=255), increase the Weight to 30 px and don't forget to check that Align Stroke to Inside button. This is starting to look like a nautical compass design.
4. How to Add Text and Mask Shapes
Step 1
Continuing with your sea logo, using the Ellipse Tool (L), create a 240 px circle, Fill it with a random color and center it. Make sure that this new shape stays selected, pick the Type on a Path Tool, and open the Character panel (Window > Type > Character).
Select the Rockwell Extra Bold font, and set the size to 15 px and the tracking to 500. Simply click on the edge of your selected circle and add your text. Set its color to black (R=0 G=0 B=0) and switch to the Direct Selection Tool (A). Use that center bracket to drag the text about as shown in the second image.
Step 2
Using the Ellipse Tool (L) for your logo design, create a 260 px circle, Fill it with a random color, and center it. Make sure that this new shape stays selected and reselect the Type on a Path Tool.
Return to the Character panel and increase the font size to 16 px. Again, click on the edge of your selected circle and add your piece of text. Make sure that the color is set to black (R=0 G=0 B=0) and switch to the Direct Selection Tool (A). Move that center bracket on the inside of your circle, which will also bring your text on the inside. Drag the text about as shown in the second image.
Step 3
Select both pieces of text and Group them (Control-G). Select this group along with that 280 px circle, open the Transparency panel (Window > Transparency), and click the Make Mask button. Uncheck that Clip box, and your nautical design will look like the third image.
Step 4
Using the Ellipse Tool (L) for your sea design, create a 210 px circle and center it. Select this new shape and focus on the Appearance panel.
Make sure that there's no color set for the Fill, and then select the Stroke. Set its color to white, increase the Weight to 5 px, and don't forget to check that Align Stroke to Inside button.
5. How to Create the Star
Step 1
Using the Rectangle Tool (M) in your sea logo, create an 80 px square, make it black, and center it. Make sure that this new shape stays selected and go to Object > Path > Add Anchor Points. Pick the Direct Selection Tool (A) and select the four anchor points highlighted in the first image. Switch to the Scale Tool (S) and simply drag the selected anchor points 25 px towards the inside, as shown in the second image.
Using the Rectangle Tool (M), create a 150 px square, make it white, and center it. Make sure that this new shape stays selected and go to Object > Path > Add Anchor Points. Pick the Direct Selection Tool (A) and select the four anchor points highlighted in the third image. Switch to the Scale Tool (S) and simply drag the selected anchor points 60 px towards the inside, as shown in the second image. Now, it's looking more like a nautical compass design.
Step 2
Select your white star and make a Copy in Front (Control-C > Control-F) in your sea design. Select this copy along with your black star, open the Pathfinder panel (Window > Pathfinder), and click the Minus Front button. Turn the resulting shapes into a compound path (Control-8) and set the Fill color to white.
Reselect that white star and simply hit Shift-X to quickly inverse the Fill and Stroke attributes. Select the stroke, increase the Weight to 5 px, and don't forget to check that Align Stroke to Inside button. Isn't this a nice nautical compass design?
Step 3
Pick the Pen Tool (P) in your logo design and create a simple triangle as shown in the following image. Make it white and go to Effect > Distort & Transform > Transform. Make sure that you check the bottom right reference point, set the Angle to 90 degrees, enter 3 in the Copies box, and then click that OK button.
Step 4
Focus on the top corner of your star shape and pick the Rectangle Tool (M). Create a 10 px square, make it white, and place it as shown in the first image.
Focus on the bottom side of this tiny shape and switch to the Direct Selection Tool (A). Select both anchor points and go to Object > Path > Average. Check the Both box and then click OK. This will simply turn your little square into a triangle.
Step 5
Make sure that your tiny triangle stays selected in your nautical logo and go to Effect > Distort & Transform > Transform. Drag the Move-Vertical slider to 190 px, check the Reflect Y box, and enter 1 in the Copies box. Click that OK button and go again to Effect > Distort & Transform > Transform. Set the Angle to 90 degrees, enter 1 in the Copies box, and then click that OK button.
Step 6
Your nautical design style logo is looking great. Select all the shapes that make up your logo and Group them (Control-G).
6. How to Mask a Group of Shapes
Step 1
Pick the Rectangle Tool (M) in your sea design and create a 90 x 50 px shape. Make it black and place it exactly as shown in the first image. Focus on the right side of this new rectangle and pick the Direct Selection Tool (A). Select the top anchor point and drag it 10 px up, and then select the bottom anchor point and drag it 10 px down.
Make a Copy of this black shape, Flip it horizontally, and place it exactly as shown in the third image.
Step 2
Keep focusing on your two black shapes in your sea logo. Select the left one and go to Effect > Warp > Fish. Check the Horizontal box, drag the Bend slider to 5%, and click that OK button. Select the other black shape and go again to Effect > Warp > Fish. Check the Horizontal box, drag the Bend slider to -5%, and click that OK button. Once you're done, reselect both black shapes and Group them (Control-G).
Step 3
Select both your groups in your logo design and go to the Transparency panel. Click that Make Mask button and don't forget to Uncheck the Clip box.
7. How to Create the Ribbons
Step 1
Pick the Rectangle Tool (M) in your nautical design and create a 90 x 50 px shape. Make it white and place it as shown in the first image.
Focus on the right side of this new rectangle, pick the Add Anchor Point Tool (+), and simply add a new anchor point as shown in the first image. Switch to the Direct Selection Tool (A), select the new anchor point, and drag it 20 px to the left.
Make a Copy of this white shape, Flip it horizontally, and place it as shown in the third image.
Step 2
The nautical logo is almost finished now. Pick the Type Tool (T) and select the Pacifico font from the Character panel. Set the Size to 20 px and the tracking to 500, and then add the "19" piece of text. Make it black and place it as shown in the first image.
Select this new piece of text along with the white shape that lies behind it and Group them (Control-G). Make sure that this new group stays selected and go to Effect > Warp > Fish. Enter the attributes shown in the following image and then click that OK button.
Step 3
Keep focusing on the group made in the previous step for the nautical design style logo. Select the text and the shape inside this group, go to the Transparency panel, and click that Make Mask button. Don't forget to uncheck that Clip box, and things should look like in the second image.
Step 4
Reselect the Type Tool (T) in the sea logoand add the "38" piece of text. Make it black and place it as shown in the first image.
Select this new piece of text along with the white shape that lies behind it, and Group them (Control-G). Make sure that this new group stays selected, and go to Effect > Warp > Fish. Enter the attributes shown in the following image, and then click that OK button.
Step 5

8. How to Add an Image for Your Background
Step 1
I promise, these are the last steps for your nautical design project. Remember, designing a logo from scratch is a long, satisfactory process. Return to the Layers panel and unlock that blue square. Select it and focus on the Appearance panel (Window > Appearance). Select the Fill, lower its Opacity to 50%, and change the Blending Mode to Color.
Step 2
Download this free image and drag it inside your document. Resize it, send it to the back using the Shift-Control-[ keyboard shortcut, and place it roughly as shown in the following image.
Step 3
Reselect your blue square, focus on the Appearance panel, and add a second fill using the Add New Fill button. Select this new Fill, set the color to R=39 G=170 B=225, lower its Opacity to 50%, and change the Blending Mode to Soft Light.

Let's begin!
What You Will Learn in This Peeling Sticker Text Effect Tutorial
how to transform text into a mockup
how to apply texture and create a sticker fold effect
how to add highlight and create a glossy sticker effect
how to apply realistic shadows
Tutorial Assets
To complete the tutorial, you will need to download any stock image of a cardboard texture from Envato Elements:
Launch Photoshop, press Command-Nto create a New Document, and apply the following settings:
Name the file 'Text_Sticker_Peeling_Effect'
Width: 21 cm
Height: 14 cm
Resolution: 300 dpi
Color Mode: RGB color
Step 2
Open the Layers panel (Window > Layers).
Then, Open (File > Open) the chosen cardboard texture that you want to use as a backdrop. Select the cardboard texture layer, which is usually the 'Background' layer in the Layers panel.
Drag and drop the 'Background' layer onto the 'Text_Sticker_Peeling_Effect'artboard file. Position it onto the artboard to fit correctly
2. How to Transform Text Into a Sticker Text Mockup
Step 1
We are going to kick off the sticker by first creating a Photoshop peeling sticker text mockup.
Select the Horizontal Type Tool (T) from the Tools menu.
Type in our sticker text, 'BANANA', or the text of your choice.
Step 2
Next, to create a sticker text effect, we will need to add a Stroke to the border of the text sticker, which is common in sticker designs.
To give the text a Stroke, click the menu on the right of the Layers panel, and select Blending Options...
Choose Layer > Layer Style >Stroke, and set the Stroke to the following:
Size: 62 px
Position: Outside
Fill Type: Color
Color Fill: #ff512 Yellow
Step 3
Rename 'Layer 1' to ' BANANA'.
Next, we shall convert our text to a Smart Object.
Right-click on the 'BANANA' layer and select Convert to Smart Object.
Step 4
Now, let's slightly rotate the text sticker, so it looks a bit displaced and not so rigid.
Transform (Command-T) and Rotate the artwork bounding box by about -4º (counter clockwise).
3. How to Apply a Texture & Create a Peeling Effect
Step 1
Now that out text is set, let's learn how to make a peeling sticker effect.
First, let's apply some texture effects to the text sticker.
Head over to Blending Options... from the Layers menu. Give the 'BANANA' layer a Pattern Overlay effect with the following specs:
Blend Mode: Multiply
Opacity: 42%
Pattern: Kraft Waffle
Scale: 75%
Check Link With Layer
OK
Step 2
Right-click on the 'BANANA' layer in the Layers panel, and select Rasterize Layer Style.
The next thing we want to do is learn how to create a peeling sticker effect in Photoshop. Grab the Polygonal Lasso Tool (L) from the Tools menu and highlight a triangular section on the bottom right of the text sticker.
We will cut the selection and flip it, to create a fold. Right-click on the selection and select Layer via Cut.
Step 3
Once the selection is cut, a new layer with the selection will be created in the Layers panel.
Select the new layer, 'Layer 1', and rename it 'FOLD'.
Then Transform (Command-T).
Edit > Transform > Flip Horizontal, to flip the selection 180°.
Grab the bounding box and rotate the selection around so it appears as if it is folded over.
Step 4
Now, right-clickon the 'FOLD' layer, and select Blending Options...
Give the layer a Color Overlay, so it will look like a plain backfold.
Blend Mode: Normal
Fill: White
Opacity: 100%
OK
So now we've got a very basic Photoshop peeling sticker effect. Let's make it look more realistic.
4. How to Apply Highlights and a Glossy Effect to the Text Sticker
Step 1
We need to apply some effects to the text sticker, so that we can make a realistic peeling sticker effect.
First, we are going to give the 'FOLD' a Satin Effect layer style.
Right-click on the 'FOLD' layer, and select Blending Options...
Check Satin from the Layer Style panel.
Apply the following Satin settings:
Blend Mode: Multiply
Fill: Black
Opacity: 50%
Angle: 47°
Distance: 117 px
Size: 142 px
Contour: Linear
OK
Step 2
Next, we will add a shine effect to the sticker so it appears glossy.
Right-click on the 'BANANA' layer, and select Blending Options...
Check Gradient Overlay from the Layer Style panel. Apply the following Gradient Overlay settings:
Blend Mode: Screen
Opacity: 40%
Gradient: Linear (As Shown in Image: black-grey-black-black-white-black)
Angle: 120°
Distance: 117 px
Scale: 67%
Step 3
Now, check the Pattern Overlay style and apply the following specs:
Blend Mode: Multiply
Opacity: 20%
Pattern: Kraft Waffle
Scale: 49%
Check Link With Layer
5. How to Apply Realistic Shadows to the Sticker Text Effect
Moving on, let's add some realistic shadowing to the text sticker to give it a lift effect.
While still on the Layer Style panel, select Drop Shadow, and apply the following specs:
Blend Mode: Multiply
Fill: Black
Angle: 90°
Distance: 3px
Spread: 27%
Size: 9 px
Contour: Linear
OK
Select the 'FOLD' layer from the Layers panel, and right-click to select the Blending Options...
Select Drop Shadow, and apply:
Blend Mode: Multiply
Opacity: 31%
Fill: Black
Angle: 90°
Distance: 8 px
Spread: 0%
Size: 24px
Contour: Linear
OK
6. How to Create a Realistic Sticker Peeling Effect
Step 1
For the final bits, we will manually add shadow effects to the sticker and sticker fold, using a soft brush from the Brushes panel (Window > Brushes)
Grab the Magic Wand Tool (W), and click it on the artboard of the 'FOLD' layer. Select > Inverse to select within the triangular fold.
On the Layers panel, Create New Layer, above the 'FOLD' layer, and rename it 'Fold Shade'.
Apply a Multiply Blend Mode from the Layers panel.
Step 2
Open the Brushes panel: Window > Brushes.
Grab the Brush Tool (B), and select a Soft Round brush of about 80 px, usually found in theDefaultbrushes set.
Select a grey color Fill of #8d8d8d and lightly brush around the edges of the fold to darken the edges.
Step 3
Now let's add a shadow under the sticker fold.
From the Layers panel, and under the 'FOLD' layer, Create New Layer. Name the new layer 'Inner Drop Shadow'.
Set the layer Blend Mode to Multiply.
Step 4
Select > Inverse to select around the triangular fold.
Select an 80 pxSoft Brush from the Brushes panel.
Select a color Fill of #c7c5c1 , and apply a shadow under the fold, as shown.
Step 5
For the final step, head over to the Layers panel.
Create New Layer under the 'BANANA' layer, and name it 'Cardboard Shading'. Set the layer Blending Mode to Multiply.
From the Brushes panel, select a 100 pxSoft Brush, with a color Fill of #e4d1c1. Apply a shadow along the bottom of the text sticker, so it looks as if it's slightly lifted.

Learn the essential terms in the world of typography. In this article, we'll clarify a few misused terms, touch on figures and symbols, and explain some indispensable typesetting terminology.
In the world of typography and design, there are innumerable terms that are necessary for beginner designers to know. A few of these terms are widely confused and misused. In this Ultimate Guide to Basic Typography, I’ve gathered some essential terms you need to know. I'll go through some of the basic misunderstood terms, like the difference between typeface and font. I'll also touch on the different font file types, explain the different type of figures and symbols, and explain some essential typesetting details.
One of the most common mistakes when talking about type is mixing up the terms "typeface" and "font". The distinction between these terms can be slightly confusing, so let’s talk about their different meanings.
A typeface is a group of characters that share a common DNA. For example, Alegreya Sans is a different typeface from Rockwell Std.
A font is a particular set of glyphs within a typeface. For instance, 12 pt Franklin Gothic URW Light is a different font from 14 pt Franklin Gothic URW Light. You’d use the same definition if you are talking about different weights—12 pt Franklin Gothic URW Light is different from 18 pt Franklin Gothic URW Book.
For many centuries, text was set individually by hand, and each letter would be a small piece of cast metal. Each letter was stored in a wooden type drawer that was organized in small compartments. A specific type drawer would have a full alphabet and other glyphs at the same size. Therefore, the term “font” had a very specific meaning, distinct from the word “typeface.”
Nowadays, these two words are often used interchangeably, but it's always good to know the distinctions between the two. A great analogy is the one of albums and songs. Typefaces are the different albums, and fonts are the songs in the album.
Font Styles
When type was first invented, all fonts were designed as roman. It wasn't until the early 16th century that italic fonts were introduced. Originating in Italy, italics were a separate group in the type classification, similar to serifs and sans serifs. By the early 18th century, foundries started pairing roman and italic designs. Italics are used to emphasize important points in a text block.
Italics or true italics are angled typefaces that are strongly influenced by calligraphy. Their slanted anatomy mimics the organic movement of cursive letters. Italics that are specifically designed for their matching roman fonts are similar in shape, with the exception of a few characters. Lowercase characters like the a, f and g tend to change in form considerably when designed as italics.
Oblique fonts are less calligraphic in style compared to italics. None of the glyphs in oblique fonts go through a cursive transformation. Some glyphs can be slightly slanted, while others go through rigorous corrections to maintain the same style as their roman counterparts. When included in a block of text, oblique fonts don’t contrast enough with their roman counterparts.
Font Weights
Morris Fuller Benton was a proponent of the creation of large type families between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The idea was that the characters within the family would share a common DNA, with slight distinctions.
The most common font weights you can find in a typeface are Regular and Bold. Some typefaces like Neue Haas Unica include extensive weights. This typeface includes multiple weights like ultra light, thin, light, regular, medium, bold, heavy, black, and extra black. The advantage of having such a wide range of weights in a single font is the ability to create a hierarchy in a page layout.
Font File Types
Let’s be real: when you download and install a font, you are left wondering if you've used the right file. We’ve all been there and questioned what the real difference is between the files. So let’s talk font file types:
PostScript (.pfb, .pfm, .lwfn, .ffil) files were developed by Adobe in the mid 1980s. A computer would need two separate files: one for on-screen display and a second one for printing. The PostScript file is not cross-platform—different files were needed for Mac and Windows computers. This became an issue when handling files on different operating systems. The file could hold a maximum of 220 glyphs.
TrueType Font (.ttf) files weredeveloped by both Apple and Microsoft in the early 1990s. This type of file renders the outlines of each character through a hinting process to achieve a high level of legibility on low-res devices. Incorporating hinting into the font became time-consuming, and not all fonts take advantage of the technology. A single file contains on-screen and printing data and up to 65,000 glyphs.
OpenType Font (.otf) files weredeveloped by Adobe and Microsoft in the late 1990s. These fonts support Unicode, meaning that one OpenType file can contain more than 65,000 glyphs. Previously, typefaces with multiple languages would have had a separate file—OpenType fonts can house them all in a single file, including swashes, numeral styles, pictograms, and more. This type of file is cross-platform: the same file can be used for Mac and Windows computers.
Figures, Signs, and Symbols
Old Style, Lining, Proportional, and Tabular Figures
You might have noticed that some numbers are differently set from typeface to typeface. Each number style has a specific use that can make designing easier. Lining and old style figures have different baseline alignments. Tabular and proportional figures have different widths, and if they are used on multiple lines, the numbers might not align. Let’s take a look at the different figure styles and when should you use them:
Lining Figures are usually the default figures you’d find in a typeface. The numbers sit on the same baseline as the rest of the characters. These figures look great next to capital letters because the height tends to be similar if not the same.
Old Style Figures or non-lining are numbers that extend above and below the baseline—similar to ascenders and descenders in letters. This style looks great if you are using it in a paragraph of text. Visually, the varying height blends in nicely with uppercase and lowercase letters.
Tabular Figures have a set width, similar to monospaced fonts. This figure style is perfect if you are planning on typesetting tables, charts, or numbered lists as they’ll align vertically without the need to kern. Avoid using this style for blocks of text as the even width will be seen as poorly kerned figures.
Proportional Figures are the opposite of tabular—these numbers have different widths depending on their shape. Therefore, the numbers don’t align vertically. Use this style of figures in body text as they blend in organically for readers.
Superscript and Subscript
Superscript and subscript figures are smaller versions of full-size numerals. They're commonly used in footnotes and endnotes, cents in pricing, diagonal fractions, and chemical notations. These figures aren’t always included in a typeface, but software like InDesign has the option to create a fake figure. Properly designed figures have been drawn to have a harmonious visual relation in terms of weight and proportions.
Superscripts or superior figures can be cap-aligned (mainly used for standard numerators) or go slightly above (for mathematical formulas). Some typefaces will include both of these or just one.
Subscripts or inferior figures can be baseline-aligned (used for denominators) or sit below the baseline (for chemical formulas).
Small Caps
Small caps are uppercase letterforms that are shorter than regular capital letters. They are often around the same height as lowercase letters or slightly taller, so they look visually harmonious. If you are looking to highlight text instead of using bold or italics, you can use small caps.
Unfortunately, many small caps nowadays are computer generated, so pay close attention when using small caps. Well-designed small caps have been drawn specifically to complement the weight and proportion of the letter. Avoid using the Small Caps button in InDesign as it will only be a proportionally reduced form of a capital letter. These tend to look too light, poorly spaced, and narrow.
Ligatures: Standard and Discretionary
You might have come across these stylish characters before and not noticed it. The word "ligatures" comes from the Latin ligare, meaning to tie. Ligatures tie two or more letters into a single character to help with kerning or for decorative purposes. Let's look at the details:
Standard ligatures help with the kerning when some characters take over the horizontal space of the next. For instance, the letter f tends to take over the space because of its hanging terminal. The overlap increases to both sides with italic fonts. Typical English ligatures include letter combinations such as fi, fl, ffi, and ffl. Depending on the language, ligatures can be different.
Discretionary or decorative ligatures don't necessarily help with the kerning but are stylistic features of a typeface. This style of ligature has a calligraphic appearance and can add personality to characters. Letter combinations like ct, sp, and st have a specific connecting style between the characters.
Hyphens and Dashes
Hyphens and dashes are punctuation marks that are often misunderstood and misused. While they look very similar, the distinct length serves specific functions. These three characters are horizontal strokes that can have specific characteristics to match a typeface.
The hyphen is a short mark used to hyphenate a word or at the end of a line to break a word. Hyphens are commonly used to separate digits in phone numbers or to join compound words, such as "long-term".
The en dash is longer than a hyphen, and the width usually matches the one of the capital N. It is used to indicate a duration of time, often replacing the prepositions “to” or “through”.
The em dash is the longest dash, and the length usually matches the one of a capital M. It is often used in place of commas, parentheses, or colons. Em dashes are also used to indicate a strong break in the structure of a sentence or a change of thought or emphasis. Typewriters don’t include the em dash—only hyphens—so some writers have used two hyphens instead of an em dash. Note that this is typographically incorrect.
Ampersand
One of the fanciest characters in a typeface is the ampersand. This symbol is a stylized depiction of "et", which is Latin for “and”. Designers often use the opportunity to design ampersands as a way to show off as it can be a symbol that contains lots of character and personality. You can substitute the word "and" for an ampersand in certain instances: headlines, titles and branding or for connecting words in a list. Try to use it sparingly or not at all in copy text as it can appear larger next to normal copy.
Trademark, register, and copyright are important symbols to use when you are designing a brand identity. They help protect creative work against plagiarism. Visually, these symbols are often used at a small size to look clean but modest as they accompany a logo.
Designers prefer to use serif symbols with serif fonts and sans symbols with sans logos. It is acceptable to use a sans symbol with a serif logo as it can read better at a smaller point size.
Legibility refers to the anatomy of a typeface and the common DNA the characters share. It is related to a reader's ability to differentiate one letter from the next. There are multiple elements that contribute to a legible typeface, such as x-height, character width, weight, counters, serifs, stroke contrast, etc.
Readability refers to how clear and easy it is to read words in a block of text. Many designers spend years mastering the art of typesetting as it helps shape the page in a cohesive and clear manner. Typesetting is very detail oriented, and there should be a mix of legibility and readability considerations. Depending on the DNA of a typeface, designers can make decisions for its readability on a page. Font size, line length, and leading, just to name a few, are some of the elements that need to be considered to make text legible.
Size
12 pt font has become the norm when creating a document. Unfortunately, it is not the most comfortable size to read for long forms of text. Many books, periodicals and magazines are printed at less than 12 pt. This is not only for aesthetic purposes—it can also get costly to print at that size.
While every typeface looks different at 12 pt, try printing it out and reading it. Size it down to 10 pt—it might not seem much, but copy text can look elegant at this size. Don’t be afraid to go up or down by 0.25 pt or 0.5 pt as it can make a big difference. It's all in the details. Depending on what the end product is, you might need to adjust. For instance, business cards are usually set at 7 or 8 pt.
Line Length
Line length is the width of a column where type is set, and it's usually measured by the number of characters on a single line.
Depending on the size of the copy text, a readable line length can vary. For copy text, a line length of between 45 and 75 characters is optimal. As you increase the point size of a font, you’ll need to increase the line length. Narrower lines are suitable for short copy as the reader’s eyes won't need to travel far to the beginning of the next line. For long forms of text, go for wider columns, so that readers won't need to jump to the following line as often.
Leading
Leading, also called line spacing, is the vertical space between each line of text and is measured from baseline to baseline.
Depending on the typeface you are using, you might need more or less leading. Darker typefaces need more leading because they tend to make a page look darker and require more breathing room. As a rule of thumb, add 2 pt to the final size of the copy text. Keep an eye on ascenders and descenders as they can often touch between the lines.
Tracking
Also known as letter spacing, tracking is the act of adding horizontal space between characters. Lowercase characters require some tracking in long forms of text to fix rags, orphans, and widows. Strings of capital letters need tracking to add some air between the characters. There isn’t a rule as to how much tracking you should add, but try to find a good balance.
Kerning
Whereas tracking is the space between characters in a word, kerning is the space between a combination of two characters.
Most typefaces are integrated with kerned pairs that are created carefully by a designer. There are many different combinations, so some are not kerned by default. There's no mathematical rule for kerning—your eyes are your best tool. The goal of kerning is to achieve equal distance between the pair so that the full word looks evenly spaced. Characters with diagonal strokes are difficult to kern because of the space they create.
Typographic Alignment
Typographic alignment refers to the text placement on a page, and it is one of the first decisions you'll make at the beginning of a project. Each alignment style has different applications and its own challenges to make the text readable.
The four main alignment styles are:
Flush Left: If you are typesetting large amounts of text, flush left is a great option for languages that are read from left to right. Try using hyphenation to achieve a pleasantly uneven rag on the right side (more on rags in the next section).
Center Align: Use center align for shorter amounts of text, like headlines, formal invitations, and introductory copy. Avoid using this style for long copy as it can become difficult to read due to the uneven edges.
Flush Right: Flush right is common in languages that read right to left, like Hebrew and Persian. Use this style for a few lines at a time and when necessary (pull quotes, sidebars, and notes).
Justified: Justified text is aligned to both sides simultaneously. This style is most common in books and newspapers, mainly to save space and fit as many characters as possible on one line. Use hyphenation with this style to avoid wide gaps between words.
Rags and Rivers
The uneven edge on the opposite side of a flush left (ragged right), flush right (ragged left) or center aligned text is called "rag". When setting type, pay attention to the ragged edge shapes as they sometimes can be distracting if not set properly. You can correct rags manually by breaking lines where necessary or hyphenating words. A good rag goes in and out in small increments.
Rivers are big gaps between words, usually caused by justified text. Use a combination of tracking and hyphenation where needed to eliminate rivers. A slightly tighter tracking will allow you to fit more characters on a line, while the hyphenation option will break words where necessary.
Orphans and Widows
Orphans are isolated lines created when a paragraph begins on the last line of a column or page. A widow is the last line of a paragraph that appears at the beginning of the next column or page.
Both of these issues cause excessive white space around the lines of text. To eliminate this problem, edit copy where necessary. If editing is not an option, try typesetting previous paragraphs meticulously. Typography is all about the details, and it's important to create a good reading experience within a clean and organized layout.
That's It!
In this article, we've shown you the most essential typographic terms. We clarified a few regularly misused words, touched on figures and symbols, and explained some indispensable typesetting terms.
It's important to learn the do's and don'ts of typography. You'll understand why some typefaces work at a small point size or why text is readable in a wide column. While this guide contains rules, I think rules were made to be broken, so experiment outside the box. Once you've mastered, practiced and applied the basics, I encourage you to get crazy and explore new horizons!
