I was born and raised in Japan and upon graduating, arrived in the US at the end of the 20th Century. Being a graphic designer at Modern Dog Design Co. really made a great impact on my design career. Because of that experience, I established a style often recognized as “California Roll Stylie,” the result of both a visual and conceptual fusion of Japanese pop culture and American urban culture.
Year of the Rooster
My creative process starts as spontaneous drawings. Then I start looking at the drawings as a complete design. That means that I carefully calculate the drawing, simplify it, exaggerate it, and add things on.
I founded STUDIO STUBBORN SIDEBURN to broaden my visual communication in art, illustration and design. I think my art pieces possess highly communicative, assertive graphics, and contain clear signs pointing back to my design background.

Remembering
I’m a self-taught painter and my favorite medium is acrylic paint. I live by the sea, and nature has always been a great inspiration to me. My art is abstract but there is always a bit of nature in all that I create. The sea and the sky is a part of me and I feel a deep connection with them both.
Handmade Jewelry
I love painting, and creating art for me is a very personal moment to express my inner world. The process of creating is free and I let my emotions play on the canvas. While I’m painting I stop thinking, my thoughts vanish and I feel a strong energy. I just let go of all that’s within me. I never make a sketch before I start. The entire process is based on a total freedom of expression.

I also create unique jewellery and ceramic art. Some of my favorite artists are Miro, Picasso, Van Gogh, Klimt, Dali, and Pollock.
Picasso once said, “Painting is a blind man’s profession. He paints not what he sees but what he feels." For me, it's the same.
